SNOW BLOWS INTO my windows for another day, making the glass white and foggy. Outside, it’s a frozen hell, where nothing survives.

Inside, I’m in heaven. Heaven because Jasper opened up for me, and his heart is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. He still doesn’t share much about being a person who can shift into a wolf, but I glean some info from what’s left unsaid.

The obvious, really. He doesn’t share the knowledge because he’s afraid. Not for him, but for his brothers, and the other shifters that might hide out there. I know very well how humans treat what’s different.

Only pain and death would await shifters if this knowledge became public.

So when I notice the subject distresses Jasper, I just change it. He likes to talk about the mountain and the area surrounding it. He knows all its history and loads of its geography. Jasper also adores geography and history overall, and I try to follow along but crap, I didn’t know I was this ignorant.

“Hold on, hold on,” I say, holding my hands up. He stops, a half-smile on his face as he watches me. “So you’re telling me a gene is the reason the Russian Revolution went down?”

He chuckles, shaking his head before he drops his gaze back to the dishes. Jasper washes and I dry them, putting them away, and I would be lying if I said that’s not the way I want life to go on.

“Not that only, of course. There’s the social context, and the tzar’s inability to see what’s right in front of him. The fact Russia worked with serfs is also…”

“But a gene?” I cut him in, not hiding my fascination. “Coming from Queen Victoria, you say? This is just nuts. I bet she had no idea this could happen.”

“No. Genetics is a fair recent subject in sciences,” and he goes on once more. I keep my attention riveted on him. My hip propped against the kitchen sink, I can’t stop watching him. The way his eyes glimmer when he gets into a story he likes. How the corners of his lips stretch and he grows breathless telling long stories I struggle to follow but do my best to.

And then Jasper stops. Brows raise on his forehead and his gaze goes over my face, down to my lips. His hands close in fists, then open.

“What’s wrong?” I whisper, ignoring the storm outside, willing the world never to move on from this.

Jasper takes a step closer. His warmth seeps into my body, and he’s so tall I’m forced to crane my neck back to meet his eyes. His hooded eyes, glued to me, drilling into my soul.

“Why are you doing this?” He asks in a breakable voice. His brows lower.

“Doing what?” Can he see my hands are shaking? Is that what he refers to?

“Why are you hearing me out with such attention?”

I lick my lips. His gaze follows every move of mine. “Because… I like this.” I don’t know what else to say.
